Throughout the history Istria had been under the rule of various cultures, from the early beginnings and the early inhabitants Histri to the Roman Empire, through the Venetian and Austro-Hungarian Empire, until it became part of Yugoslavia, and eventually nowadays it is part of Croatia. Cultural heritage of Istria because of its history is extremely rich.

The Istrian peninsula offers exceptional contrasts; the interior is still untouched and slightly mountainous with old medieval towns on the mountain peaks, surrounded by fertile fields, while coastline offers many beaches and top entertainment.

Cities such as Pula, Rovinj and Poreč offer a window into the past with very well preserved historic monuments and streets. Roman amphitheatre in Pula is considered as one of the largest and best preserved amphitheatres in the world. The old city of Poreč contained street layout of Roman castrum. The main streets Dekumanus and Cardo Maximus are still preserved in its original ancient form. Next to them is placed Euphrasian basilica from the 5th century, which was in 1997 proclaimed as the UNESCO world cultural heritage monument. The historical town of Rovinj is certainly the most romantic place in Istria, the old city dominated by the Church of Saint Euphemia leaves a lasting impression on every single visitor who found himself in Rovinj. Istria is full of small towns with medieval history which you will discover on every side of the peninsula where you arrive.

With its Mediterranean climate, Istria is pleasant to visit in any season. Enjoy long bicycle rides (more than 500 kilometres of arranged bike tracks), visit the world renowned astronomical observatory in Višnjan, relax at the largest independent film festival in Croatia in a small town Motovun, watch popular tennis stars on the ATP in Umag, when the entire town turns into a great party zone, visit the Brijuni Islands and find out more about Croatian political history with a touch of Africa.
